1. Why Mechanical Engineering?

A lot of people would call that the car, the airplane, the ship and so on are typical representatives and products of mechanical engineering. The statement is not wrong, it is right. But it is not sufficient. A distinctive feature of mechanical engineering is its relationship with various kinds of scientific and technological fields, as electronics, chemistry, biology, special medical technology, nanotechnology and etc. In industry, not only big devices such as car, plane and wind energy convertor/propeller, but also the small ones such as layered coil in a smart phone and even a nano-coil are manufactured by using various mechanical technologies. For this reason, the mechanical engineering, which integrates various technological approaches, can be considered as a fundamental technology in industry.

2. Overview

2-1. Scope and what you will study
Basic subjects of mechanical engineering are called as “three dynamics”, i.e. strength of materials, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. You can study these three dynamics and a lot of other subjects like kinematics of the machines, control engineering, mechanical design and etc., as classroom lectures. Furthermore, you will have exercises and experiments based on these study subjects. Moreover, drawing, CAD drafting and practical training on machine will be useful for your education. Graduate thesis will be the most excellent chance for you to study, develop and change your knowledge as a students in this university. You can solve various engineering problems under the guidance of your professor. Join us and you will be next successful engineers. Do the best for yourself!
2-2. Attainment target of the study and education
A) General culture and ethics
A-1) Students will have knowledge and general cultures, e.g. culture, law and economy etc., as well-educated citizens.
A-2) Students will have ethical qualities as an engineer.
B) Science as foundation of engineering
B-1) Students will have fundamental knowledge necessary for engineering, e.g. mathematics, physics and chemistry etc.
B-2) Students will have fundamental knowledge concerning information processing.
C) Expert subjects for mechanical engineering
C-1) Students will have knowledge on the basic subjects of mechanical engineering : mechanics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics and control engineering.
C-2) Students will have knowledge of applied mechanics, e.g. materials, energy conversion and bio-mechanics.
C-3) Students will have knowledge of mechanical experiments, measuring instruments and machines.
D) Engineering design
D-1) Students will have skills of performing mechanical design and CAD drafting.
D-2) Students will have task solving skills, based on problem learning.
E) Communication
E-1) Students will acquire skills of writing and doing presentations in Japanese language.
E-2) Students will master their English language skills.

3. Postgraduate school

Our school has postgraduate courses for mechanical engineering, two years course for master degree and further three years course for doctoral degree. You can study your master degree and/or doctoral degree in order to be an expert of mechanical engineering.

4. Further information

The Mechanical engineering course includes three more study fields : nano-mechanics, thermo-fluid-science and human-mechatronics.
4-1) Nano-mechanics field ( link to each lab)
Development of nano-materials, nano-scale machining, inspection and etc. are realized.
4-2) Thermo-fluid-science field ( link to each lab)
We study clean energy, try to solve thermo-fluid engineering problems for local requirement and analyze transportation in a thermo-fluid device from a scientific view point.
4-3) Human-mechatronics field (link to each lab)
We develop medical and /or wealth devices for aging society, control systems include actuators and sensors to support various bases of industrial fields.
We have a mechanical workshop to support students and staff of the department and the University. Mr. Tadashi FUJITA is in charge of the workshop.
